6.5 Halogen Bonding

Evidence has been published that organohalides, such as methyl iodide CH3I, can participate in something resembling hydrogen bonds. The halides act like hydrogen bond donors, with ideally a straight line between the halogen, its carbon atom, and the h-bond acceptor. Iodides exhibit this effect most strongly, up to 26 kJ/mol or 6.3 kcal/mol, while bromides and chlorides have weaker effects, and fluorides very little or none at all.
